Timing Belts/Cambelts or Timing Chains

Timing belt/cambelt replacement intervals vary widely depending on vehicle make & model. Please refer to your service book for manufacturers’ specified intervals.

It is vital that these belts are replaced in accordance with the manufacturers’ recommended intervals; failure to replace them could result in the belt breaking. If this happens it can cause detrimental damage to your engine, resulting in very expensive & extensive repairs.

Generally, timing chains are maintenance-free. However, it is really important that the engine oil change schedule is adhered to and that the correct grade of engine oil is used. The majority of timing chain failures are due to a lack of servicing.

Signs that you may need to replace your cambelt/timing belt or timing chain:

• Rattling sound when you start the car – this can mean that your timing chain has stretched or worn
• Your car won’t start – this can be because a broken timing belt/cambelt is not allowing the engine to start
• Whining or whirring noises from the engine area – this can indicate an incorrectly tensioned timing belt/cambelt
